Haibun: Her Thorns Bloom
Cacti bloom beautifully in the spring.
This icon of rugged, this icon of pain and suffering, this icon of long spines with sharp ends; she blooms.
Sometimes this icon blooms as a single mom who goes through work holding her stomach and dizzy from her migraine, she pushes through for her and her daughters. She is strong despite the nods her John Wayne coworkers gets for just looking the part, yet they have never had to take care of themselves.
So she smiles and turns back to dealing with her struggles. This is how she owns her understanding of rugged. She isn’t bitter because she is strength and she isn’t swayed because she knows her beauty when her spines bloom.
