Haibun: Suburban Cactus

My expectations were for it to be pulled up by its roots. It broke close to the base in the storm the night before. Most fallen cactus I’ve seen in the wilderness have come up by their roots. Looking at it, it seemed decayed in the spot where it gave way. A healthier cactus is almost cork like, not this one. This one, eventually, was meant to be on display but was rotting on the inside. It was truly part of the suburbs that asked it to look pretty for the neighbors to admire.
