Haibun: Contracting

Coolness leads to contracting of things...

I am aware of the subtle cooling from summer’s heights. I’m not suggesting summer is over, especially here in the Sonoran Desert, but I’m aware of what comes after the contraction of that “feeling of summer.” It’s far from a full contraction, it’s the mere beginnings, a noticing of slight changes.  I become more aware of it seeing a few browns where greens were and a couple more cooler temperatures where extreme hot was.  The exact feeling is hard to place, but, it’s along the feelings that push for awareness and preparation.

So as we start to bend more and more with the shorter days and shorter mercury spikes, I know today is not yet the weekly fall schedule, today is still part of summer and the laziness that only comes from a three day holiday weekend. But I must recognize how I am starting to speed up ever so slightly—my unconscious urgings for my summer driftings seem to be contracting into a faster pace? And so I’m reminded of where we are heading, yet again: another autumn of contractions from colder, from “heading that way” and other phrases of purpose and “on mission” that are autumn and school and Q4 focuses.
