Haibun: Later Spring Bloom
‘Okay, it’s not a strangers hand, oh jeez no, just his hand. Why not just shake his hand?’
She reached over the open passenger seat—his grip set out to shake hers but her’s more to hold… to linger on his for a moment. Her eyes grew into the smile that drank up his smile before she drove off. Pulling him back to the window one last time, “Thank you for asking me to put on my hazard lights when you were giving me directions, that was so thoughtful of you, so chivalrous of you.”
A new flower bloomed in the bed beside the road as she head back into her day because a cactus can bloom later in the spring, long after all the other cacti. The cactus flower doesn’t make it “Spring,” just something small and spring-like that happened.
fizzled stems rise
pinkish shoots surprise: flowered.
no rain still springs forth
