Haibun: Passing Through
Between the cliffs on one side and the mountains on the other sits the flat floor. In fact, most of the desert could be described that way: always passing between the the impassible. Not that the flatter parts are easy with the scorching sun, the almost metal-like thorns of some plants, and the disorienting nature of 6-8 foot trees. But it's more passable than the cliffs on one side or trying to get up a 2,000 foot slope of loose rock.
And often, the path of least resistance, the one we know is the way forward, still needs our determination to succeed. I still need to tell myself no when sticking to a budget or a diet, even when I’m hungry or there’s a great sale. Or to get out in front of a tax bill requires me to stay the course.
It’s the path forward as an adult, it's hard, but to go the other way is dangerous and to give up is to be eaten alive by the sun.
