Haibun: Horses of the West

Walking up the Salt River, we pushed against the current that would quickly pull our body surfs back down to where we started. So much power channeled through the narrower parts of the river. With my nieces and nephews, we explored the river and played.

And as we were packing up, there, deeper into the current, stood a whole herd of wild horses. There in the power of the river stood these 1,000 to 1,200 pounds of pure muscle, cooling and moving so freely. I suppose it is the power of the horse, but also their individual personality, that made them the paths to, and the repathing of, this settling West.
