Haibun: Autumn Walking

No longer the hands of high heat to hold my chest with the grip of authoritarian rule. Different from the tyrant’s hand of humidity in the mountains of Upstate New York, the oppressive heat of the Sonoran Desert has given way to a parade of delightful days.

It is Autumn: the pass to go forth, the pass to walk amongst the warm days and cooling evenings, the pass to look, and the pass to stay. These are the days that wake in the cool and leave in the pleasant. These are also the days to walk past the expectations others have for us, past our limits, past what we thought we could do, past what we are supposed to be… and if you are one of the Rohingya readers still in Bangladesh or back now in Myanmar, walk past the dehumanizing discrimination of the majority. You are as human as I am, as we all are, so walk into Autumn with a straight spin and head held high.

Autumn is for us to feel the limitlessness of the cool air before it gets too cold. Autumn is the freedom of the leaf from the branch, the apple from the tree, and the soul from our limits.
