Haibun: As The Tree

Ever wondered how a lone tree arrived in the middle of a field or maybe how it ended up amongst all the cacti? And have you ever look at that tree and saw yourself? I have.

Seeing this little tree with its jumping prickers—maybe its a bush, maybe it’s a tree?—and not noticing any around it, I paused out of curiosity: ‘How did it get here?’ When I’m undetermined or unconstrained to complete a trail or to be someplace, I have these opportunities to drift to a stop. In these paused moments I end up seeing myself only when I’m not looking because I tend to see myself only afterwards when I’m remembering and reflecting. In the moment I’m given over to curiosity.

So, taking this picture and walking on, it was only afterwards that I was this tree or bush and knew we were both where both out of place and yet, both where we should be. And it was only afterwards when I was free to conclude things, free from having to conclude certain things that things came together as they needed to.

lone, a single tree,
no others to see, yet there.
