Haibun: Intuition

On the South Rim, a few years back, I noticed a little trail that wound down to an almost independent, suspended rock ledge. The problem, there was some distance between the rocks and the path, distance as in space between them and also a long way down.

When I walk the rim the canyon or climb to the top of a mountain, I am usually a bit cautious of where I climb, avoiding loose rocks or spaces that require me to jump. But on this ledge, something deeper in me was calling.

I recently heard a man say that our intuition develops in us before our words do, and it speaks wisdom from the universe or from God. From the faith tradition of my roots — Fundamentalist Pentecostal — we would say this is where you hear “the Spirit of God.

It was that level telling me to get out on the rock. As I walked out to the edge where I’d have to jump a 5 foot gap, I saw this ledge a few feet below, maybe 8 inches wide, that I used to climb the gap and then up on the island ledge.

I listened to the wisdom of my intuition, so freedom and my sense of power pulsed through me. Usually choked by what I should do, this time it pulsed through me.

distance, hear and there

at the edge, aware, long stare,

winter in the air
